Spirit Airlines on Friday raised its financial forecast for the fourth quarter of 2023, sending shares soaring more than 30% after a rout earlier this week that followed a judge's ruling that blocks JetBlue Airways from buying the budget carrier. Spirit said in a filing that it expects revenue to come in at about $1.3 billion, at the high end of its earlier forecast, thanks to strong bookings at the end of the year. The airline said in the filing that it had $1.3 billion of liquidity at the end of 2023. Spirit said Friday it expects compensation from Pratt & Whitney, a unit of RTX, in connection with that engine issue. Spirit plans to hold a quarterly call with analysts on Feb. 8 to discuss results and its outlook.

AMD and Nvidia hit all-time highs on Thursday as investors continue to clamor for shares of the companies building chips that power artificial intelligence. AMD shares rose over 1% during trading on Thursday to reach its highest-ever closing price, $162.67, while Nvidia, rose just under 2% to $571.07. Both companies have notched double-digit percentage gains to start the year after an explosive 2023 in which AMD shares popped 127.6% and Nvidia stock rocketed 238.8%. Analysts also see AMD improving its AI software, eliminating one major reason why Nvidia chips were preferred over AMD's. On Thursday, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company , which manufactures Nvidia and AMD chips, reported better-than-expected sales.

NASA is pushing back the schedule for upcoming missions of its flagship Artemis lunar program by about a year as the agency's contractors work to finish technology needed to return U.S. astronauts to the moon's surface. Artemis 2 — with a four-person crew, which NASA announced last spring — was previously planned to launch in November, while Artemis 3 had been targeting December 2025. The pair of missions are set to follow the uncrewed Artemis I mission that flew in 2022. The Artemis program represents a series of missions with escalating goals, aiming to return astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time since the Apollo era. Nelson's comments confirm reporting by CNN and Reuters that NASA would be pushing out the schedule for the program.

Nvidia (NVDA) was surprisingly quiet in the back half of 2023 despite some amazing earnings beat-and-raise quarters. Only just on Monday did NVDA finally break free from the technical range that held the stock captive below the undoubtedly psychologically important $500 resistance level. I think the answer is yes, there's more room for the stock to run. Finally breaking $500 Back to Nvidia, the clear winner of the massive rotation into semiconductors as we charge towards the exponential age. State-owned Motor Sich is Ukraine's main manufacturer of aircraft and helicopter engines, including for some of the world's largest cargo planes. Many legacy Ukrainian defense companies will trigger "red flags" during the lengthy due diligence and compliance reviews conducted by Western defense companies, said one U.S. defense executive. A Motor Sich representative stopped by ITA's booth and spoke briefly about their company's capabilities, the spokesperson said. ROOTING OUT CORRUPTIONZelenskiy has made rebuilding Ukraine's defense and aerospace sector a top priority, which includes deeper investment in drone technology. While the talks in Washington later this week and last month's Dubai air-show contacts are potentially promising, the political realities that Western defense officials are grappling with could hinder any progress.

Spirit Airlines is offering voluntary exit packages to salaried employees, the budget carrier's latest cost-cutting measure as it expects financial strains to continue next year. "Now, we're taking the next difficult step – enacting an Early Voluntary Out program for salaried Team Members," Christie wrote in the memo. The company had a similar plan during the height of Covid pandemic. "Based on the success of that plan, we're implementing a similar set of opportunities to help us right-size our organization for our current fleet and business constraints." Bottom line This was a very strong quarter, with almost nothing to nitpick. This year's rapid Data Center sales growth we've seen has been driven largely by cloud providers and enterprises. Sales to China and other impacted regions have, in the past few quarters, accounted for 20% to 25% of Data Center sales. However, the team added that they "believe the decline will be more than offset by strong growth in other regions." Guidance Looking ahead to Nvidia's fourth quarter of fiscal 2024, we once again got far stronger guidance than Wall Street was modeling.

GKN Aerospace-owner Melrose lifts 2023 profit expectations

REUTERS/Hannah McKay/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 16 (Reuters) - British aerospace supplier Melrose (MRON.L) said on Thursday it expected 2023 profit to be 7% higher than its previous expectations, partly driven by stronger aftermarket demand and improved pricing. The owner of GKN Aerospace, which counts Airbus (AIR.PA) and Boeing (BA.N) as its top customers, said trading and margin performance during the four month ended Oct. 31 was better than its previous expectations. Melrose, which spun off its auto and other businesses in April to become a pure-play aerospace supplier, now expects an adjusted core profit of 680 million pounds to 700 million pounds ($842.5-$867.2 million) for the year ending Dec. 31. In September, Melrose flagged a potential cash hit of about 200 million pounds through 2026 after Pratt & Whitney parent RTX (RTX.N) warned of grounding of some engine variants for quality checks. GKN Aerospace has a 4% programme share on the GTF PW1100G variant impacted by this issue.
